Quilt for a vet

Members of the Hay River Quilters made and donated many quilts to area soldiers returning from the Middle East several years ago. The members decided to continue the tradition by presenting quilts to selected veterans at area Veterans Day ceremonies. Drive underway for winter coats, blankets for needy

The Roman Catholic parish cluster of St. Joseph, Barron, St. Boniface, Chetek, St. Peter, Cameron, and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Strickland (Rusk County) will once again sponsor a winter coat and blanket drive for the needy in the Barron County area.

Red Kettle drive kicks off Nov. 17

Friday, Nov. 17, is the start date for the 2017 Barron County Salvation Army red kettle campaign. Ceremonial kickoffs for this year’s campaign took place Friday, Nov. 3. The honorary co-captains are Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald and Barron County Health and Human services director Stacy Frolik.

The Barron FFA Chapter is holding its annual fruit sale at this time and will be accepting orders now through Nov. 13, 2017. Delivery will take place in mid-December.

Elks Lodge breakfast benefits women veterans

The volunteer-staffed Elks Lodge Breakfast will be held Sunday, Nov. 12, from 8:30-11 a.m. Proceeds from the breakfast go toward programs supported by the United Women’s Veterans. Each month, the Elks’ leadership team designates a local charity to benefit from the breakfast.

Turtle Lake Legion Post plans Veteran’s Day dance

American Legion Post 137, Turtle Lake, will host a Veteran’s Day dance Saturday, Nov. 11, from 7:30 p.m.-12 a.m. at the post, 326 South Maple Street. Music will be provided by Rob Knowlton beginning at 8 p.m. Raffle prizes include a Savage Axis II .30-06 rifle, synthetic stock, with a 3x9 scope (the first place prize, your choice of the gun or $350 in cash). The second prize is $100 cash--$75 for third place.

Genealogical Society plans certificate award meeting

The Blue Hills Genealogical Society will celebrate their Certificate Award evening with a dinner at Rolling Oaks Restaurant in Barron on Tuesday, Nov. 7. The dinner will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the basement meeting room of the restaurant.

Field day on cover crops begins Friday south of Barron

The Farmers of the Barron County Watershed will be hosting a fall field day on Friday, Oct. 27, starting at 10:30 a.m.  The field day will feature results of interseeding cover crops into standing corn at different growth stages of the corn. Variety of cover crops, herbicide history and other variables will be compared on several plots
