Phyllis A. Balko, 88, Cumberland, Wis., died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017, at Heritage Lakeside, Rice Lake.

She was born April 22, 1929, at Flint, Mich., to Daniel and Margaret Holt. The family moved to Blackduck, Minn., and she graduated from Blackduck High School.

She was married at Almena on April 3, 1948, to Arnold Balko and they moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where they lived a short time before moving to the Almena area and raising their four children.

She was active in her church, where she taught Sunday school and was involved in the Ladies' Aid. Phyllis enjoyed the monthly coffee gatherings with her neighbors. She was talented at crocheting, baking and preparing homemade meals.

Her family was her most treasured gift. Her door was always open to the grandkids and anyone else who needed a place to stay.

During her time spent in the nursing home, hers eyes would light up when the great grandkids, and great grand-dog would come to visit. She loved to hear their stories.

Surviving are a daughter Kathy (Ken) Miller of Barron; sons Tom (Shirl) of Cumberland, Dave of Almena and Jerry (Kelly) of St. Charles, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Lorene Garling of Prior Lake, Minn.; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 3, 2007; and a brother Cliff Holt.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, from St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Almena, with Pastor Preston Paul officiating and burial to follow at St. Matthew Cemetery. Pallbearers are Brian Miller, Rick Miller, Scott Miller, Lee Balko, Kyle Balko and Chris Balko.

Visitation will be held an hour prior to services.

Skinner Funeral Home, Cumberland, is handling arrangements.
