Elvira “Vi” Ann Solum, 82, of Rice Lake, Wis., peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family on Aug. 5, 2017, at Rice Lake.
Vi was born in Rice Lake to Walter and Clara Baumberger on Jan. 5, 1935. She graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1952. She married Wayne Frederick Solum on Oct. 3, 1953. They shared 42 wonderful years together before his passing in 1996. Vi’s life revolved around her family. She proudly raised six children while helping out on the family farm. She was a wonderful grandmother to 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mom always took time to have fun, play games and lived by her motto “What will you remember most? That the house was clean or that I played games with you.” She also enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, playing her piano, visiting the casino and traveling the world.
Vi was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; parents, Walter and Clara; brother, Walter “Wally” Baumberger; and sisters Charlotte Doyle, Clara Mae Putnam, Freida LaPlante and Barbara Cook.
Vi is survived by her six children, their spouses, her grandchildren and her great- grandchildren. (1) Pamela Hennekens of Rice Lake and her children, Rhonda Johnston and her sons, Jacob and Vincent, Bryan (Alexandra) Hennekens and their daughter Charlotte and Aaron Hennekens. (2) Cherie (David) Luell of Spooner and their children Ryan (Kally) Luell and their children, Kensley and Karson, Renee Luell and her daughters, Ellarae and Madelynn, Anthony “Tony” (Kimberly) and their son, Kollin, Amy (Kevin) Vandenberg. (3) Wayne “Chuck” (Cathleen) Solum of Rice Lake and their children Kayla (Nathan) Kringle and their children Remington and Elnora, Isaac Solum, Sierra Solum, and Abigail Solum. (4) Patti (Eugene) Arnold of Mosinee and their children, Brett (Deanna) Arnold, and Casey (Matt) Golden. (5) Vicky (Ronald) Wolf of Freedom and their children, Megan Wolf, Michelle Wolf, Christine Wolf, Nathan Wolf and Eric Wolf. (6) Gary (Janice) Solum of Rice Lake and their children Nick (Brenna)
Solum, Allison Solum, Garrett Solum, and Jackie Solum. Vi is also survived by her three Brothers, Frederick (Sally) Baumberger of Rice Lake, John (Nancy) Baumberger of Beaverton, Ore., and David (Barbara) Baumberger of DePere; three sisters, Virginia Apfel of Green Bay, Esther Swan of Barron and and Carol “Jean” Elson of Simi Valley, Calif.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at Our Lady of Lourdes
Catholic Church in Dobie, with Father Samuel Schneider officiating. Interment will be at Nora Cemetery in Rice Lake. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at
Appleyard’s Home for Funerals in Rice Lake and for one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Friday.
Any memorials received will be used to sponsor Vi’s team in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Rice Lake on Sept. 16, 2017. We welcome anyone who wants to walk with us.
