Memorial Day in Barron

The Barron American Legion and VFW Auxiliary hosted an abbreviated Memorial Day program at Wayside Cemetery in Barron Monday morning. Due to concerns about COVID-19 and crowds, the ceremony was not intended to attract a lot of people, but a handful of citizens were scattered here and there to show their respect and honor the soldiers who died defending freedom in our nation’s wars. Legion Commander Greg Roth was the Master of Ceremonies, which included the placing of a wreath in memory of soldiers lost in combat. The ceremony was conducted by Denise Peterson and Beth Roth from the VFW Auxiliary, who stood to Greg Roth’s left in the above photo. Chuck Kirkwood played taps. Greg Roth said their next stop was at Monroe Manor in Barron where “Taps” was again played prior to a last stop at the New Scandinavian Cemetery, where pouring rain ended activities for the day.                                                                 Photo by Jim Bell
