Truck flies off overpass, man airlifted

A man driving a Chevrolet Silverado was airlifted by Life Link III to an area trauma center after his pickup, driving south on Hwy. 53, went into the median and over the guardrail at Chetek between the north- and southbound bridges over CTH I on Tuesday, May 14. A semi truck driver, Dale Christen, said he saw the pickup flying through the air. It cleared the westbound lanes of CTH I and landed in the median, digging out a shallow crater and coming to rest in about one pickup length. Chetek Ambulance Service, Chetek First Responders, Chetek police, Chetek firefighters, Barron County sheriff’s deputies and Blackjack Towing responded. The man did not appear seriously injured and walked to a stretcher with help from responders. He was then transported by ambulance to the Chetek Airport for the airlift. The man appeared to be in his 60s. His name was not immediately available. Pictured above, the pickup rests in the median of CTH I, where it landed after launching off the Hwy. 53 median. It traveled about 25 yards through the air and dropped about 16 feet. Photo by Carl Cooley, The Chetek Alert
