Ione C. Steele, 95, Chetek, Wis., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019, at Heritage Lakeside, Rice Lake.

She was born Aug. 28, 1924, to Dock and Elvida Davis in the town of Sioux Creek, Barron County. She attended two years of high school at Dallas, and graduated from Chetek High School in 1941 and Barron County Normal in 1943. She later took courses through the university at Eau Claire.

Ione taught at Sioux Creek School until her marriage to Orla Steele in 1945. Ione and Orla farmed and raised their family in that community until retiring in 1974 to Chetek.

Throughout the years, she was very involved in the work of the Barron County Association for the Developmentally Disabled, where she served on the executive committee, wrote funding grants for work projects, and a HUD grant for residentials. She was appointed administrative director during the construction of their two residentials: Agricove at Cameron and Barc Lane at Chetek. She also served a term as state regional chairman.

While on staff at Barron County Developmental Disabilities Services, Ione initiated under the auspices of that program a sales outlet with her clients known as the Knot Shoppe in downtown Barron.

She was an avid reader and held a special interest in religion, astronomy, decorating and growing daylilies.

Surviving are a son Rod (Ada); daughters Candy (Gary) Truman and Arla Jo (Scott) Losey; grandchildren Jason Johnson, Justin Johnson, Misti Jones, Amy Ricci and Bailey Ducommun; and six great-grandchildren.

Ione was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter Lisa; brothers Jesse and Arthur; sisters Sylvia (Alfred) Neilson, Darma (Havey) Bovan and baby sister, Theoda.
