Barbara 'Barbie' Harland Kintigh, 67, Zachary, La., formerly of Ridgeland, Wis., passed away at her home, surrounded by her husband and friend on July 2, 2019, from degenerative heart failure.
She was born Jan. 9, 1952, at Baldwin, the first of three children to Gerald and Joyce (Faber) Geurkink. Barbie and family moved around through her young childhood before they settled on a chicken ranch in San Marcos, Calif.
During her senior year of high school at Unity Christian and her freshman year at Dordt College in Iowa, she stayed with her grandmother Sadie Faber at Sioux Center, Iowa. During this time, she discovered her love of caring for others and decided to pursue nursing. She finished her schooling at Hollywood Presbyterian Nursing School in Los Angeles, Calif.
True to Hollywood fashion, the nurse fell in love with a Navy sailor, Clifford Harland. They married in 1975 and moved to Prairie Farm. They opened the Carpet Shoppe in 1978 and Barbie taught rosemaling and painting classes, and also sold her art though the shop. In the late 1980s, she decided to return to nursing and began working at Pioneer Nursing Home, Prairie Farm, where she cared for the residents and trained many nurse’s aides.
After her 12 years of marriage ended, Barb moved with her four children to Ridgeland, where she worked and resided until 2001. In 2001, she chose to leave nursing to take care of her father back in San Marcos.
In 2007, Barbie met her husband Ray Kintigh from Zachary, La., through their shared hobby of computer gaming. After the passing of her father, she married and moved to Zachary. She spent the last 12 years of her retirement there, spending time with neighbors, friends and family.
Surviving, in addition to her husband Ray Kintigh, are children Chistopher/Tuffer (Laura) Harland, Meribeth Harland, Heidi (Josh) Woldhuis and Heather Harland; grandchildren Benjamin, Kaitlyn, Madison, Destiny, Kyra, Markus, Isabella and Ella; a brother John (Patty) Geurkink; a sister Sandy (David) Roth; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Barbie was preceded in death by her mother Joyce (Faber) Geurkink, and her father Gerald Geurkink.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13th, from the Ridgeland Area Community Center. Lunch will follow the service.
