A proposed winery and distillery has received Barron County approval to operate at a location on Hwy. SS between Rice Lake and Cameron.
Real North Winery and Distillery is planned near the intersection of Hwy. SS and 17 3/8 Avenue just north of Meadow Creek.
Documents presented to the Barron County Board of Adjustment last week indicate the property owner as Lazy A Ranch, owned by John W. Mommsen, with Paul LaRock as agent.
LaRock said Real North will produce various wines—from plum to Syrah to Moscato—and spirits, including vodka, brandy, whiskey and gin. Ingredients will be sourced as much as possible from northwestern Wisconsin, said LaRock.
“Our wines, spirits and cocktails will be innovative, unique, and released seasonally,” he said.
In the application to the county, documents show architect plans for a new building with a wine and distilling production area, bar, seating and outdoor patio with a fire pit.
LaRock said the building will have a “modern farmhouse” theme with black and wood elements, a 30-plus-foot bar and 10-foot fireplace.
“Real North will be bright and inviting, using natural light to bring people together,” said LaRock.
He said Real North will also have four lanes for ax throwing, and will be a space to enjoy music and watch sporting events.
LaRock said the project is in the middle stages, and they are working to meet state requirements. He said they hope to begin construction this fall, but it may take longer.
“With a little luck, a lot of help and some perseverance this will become a reality,” said LaRock.
