An Almena woman charged in the stabbing death of her boyfriend last August will remain in jail pending an arraignment hearing in December, following an appearance Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, in Barron County Circuit Court.
According to court records, 44-year-old Melanie R. Kuula appeared at a half-hour hearing that included testimony by law enforcement officers with the Barron County Sheriff’s Department and the Turtle Lake Police Department. Both agencies were involved in the investigation of the stabbing death of 50-year-old Brett M. Bents during a domestic quarrel on Saturday, Aug 10, at a downtown Almena apartment building.
Kuula was charged in the complaint with second-degree intentional homicide, which is punishable by up to 60 years in prison.
The hearing also included results of an autopsy hearing conducted by Midwest Medical Examiners Office of Ramsey, Minn.
