Teens bail from fleeing pickup

An 18-year-old Chetek man received multiple traffic tickets, a 15-year-old girl was treated for a minor injury, and a total of six people were tracked down by law enforcement after a high-speed chase early Saturday morning, April 3, 2021, both in and near the village of Cameron, according to the Barron County Sheriff’s Department. An accident report identified the driver of the 2004 Ford F-150 as Ethan Komp, Chetek. Dispatch logs said the truck fled from an officer in Cameron at a speed estimated at more than 100 mph. A sheriff’s deputy later reported the fleeing truck was going south on 19th Street (Airport Road) when it turned onto 12th Avenue, about one-half mile south of U.S. Hwy. 8, then drove south through a farm field. The report said the driver turned off his headlights, to avoid detection, then continued south toward 11 1/2 Avenue. The truck hit a ditch along the north side of 11 1/2 Avenue, went over the road and crashed into an adjoining field after sustaining what the report said was disabling damage. Dispatch logs indicate multiple individuals fled the scene, but law enforcement soon located the driver. The accident report indicates that besides the driver and the injured girl, the passengers included three 16-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl, some of them who walked back to the accident scene from the surrounding field. Komp was cited for excessive speed, unreasonable and imprudent speed, operating with a defective tail lamp, and displaying unauthorized registration, the report said. Photos contributed
