Sentencing is set for March 17, 2023, for a Minnesota man charged with causing more than $10,000 in damages at an electrical substation near Turtle Lake last June, according to Barron County Circuit Court records.
David M. Jones, 36, 23611 Kanabec St. NW, St. Francis, Minn., was freed on signature bond after pleading guilty to a felony charge of falsely acting as a public official during an appearance on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
According to the criminal complaint, Jones could have faced up to a 10-year prison sentence on a separate felony charge of theft of movable property valued at over $10,000.
But in a deal with prosecutors, Jones pleaded guilty to one of two lesser charges in the complaint, in exchange for dismissal of the other two counts. He could face up to three and one-half years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine at sentencing.
The complaint said Jones used a pickup truck with a rotating, blinking amber light on top of the cab, and used a reciprocating saw and other tools to steal copper wire from an electrical substation near the corner of Third Street and U.S. Hwy. 8, between Turtle Lake and Almena.
Officials with Barron Electric Co-op and Dairyland Power Co-op told investigators that the damages to the substation would cost in excess of $10,000 to repair.
