Sentencing is set Jan. 17, 2023, for a Rice Lake woman who pleaded guilty Friday, Nov. 11, to one felony count of forgery in Barron County Circuit Court.
Defendant Carrie J. Hopkins, 44, 3000 Galahad Lane, Unit 3, Rice Lake, could face up to six years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine at sentencing, court records added.
In a deal with prosecutors, Hopkins pleaded guilty to the single felony charge in exchange for dismissal of eight other similar counts. She remains free on bond pending sentencing.
According to a complaint filed Dec. 2, 2021, Hopkins used checks which were supposed to have been sent to a Duluth, Minn., property management company. She also allegedly deposited funds from other altered checks in her bank account.
The defendant allegedly told investigators she had taken the money because she had started using methamphetamine, the complaint added.
