Kevin Gilles of Cameron shot this monster black bear while hunting Thursday evening, Oct. 6, near Bruce.
Gilles passed up the bruiser earlier during the bear season, which closed Oct. 11, because he had an even bigger bruin on trail camera. However, both bears ‘went nocturnal’ shortly after the season started. Gilles’ game camera showed the above bear began returning to the bait station closer to dusk, and he finally got another chance to take his shot at 6:45 p.m. Oct. 6.
He didn’t pass up the opportunity, and came away with a behemoth that tipped the scales at 497 pounds after field dressing, with an estimated live weight of 580 pounds. This was the first bear taken with a rifle by Gilles, who hunted bear with bow and arrow for many years. His previous biggest bear, taken by bow circa 1997, dressed out at 425 pounds.
Gilles is having a full body mount created with his latest trophy bruin.
